William Wordsworth was a British early leader of romanticism in English poetry, ranks as one of the greatest lyric poets in the history of English literature. William Wordsworth, who rallied for "common speech" within poems and argued against the poetic biases of the period, wrote some of the most influential poetry in Western literature, including his most famous work, The Prelude, which is often considered to be the crowning achievement of English romanticism.

First published in July , shortly after Wordsworth's death, The Prelude was the culmination of over fifty years of creative work. The great Romantic poem of human consciousness, it takes as its theme 'the growth of a poet's mind': leading the reader back to Wordsworth's formative moments of childhood and youth, and detailing his experiences as a radical undergraduate in France at the time. The Excursion () was well received and this was followed by The White Doe of Rylstone (), Miscellaneous Poems () and The Waggoner ().
